The History of Hartford GAA

The Hartford Gaelic Athletic Association, formerly known as the Hartford Gaelic Football Club, based at the Irish American Home in Glastonbury, CT is an Irish sporting club celebrating the sports and culture of Ireland and her immigrants to the shores of the United States.  The spirit of our club is based on the pride of the past, the excitement of the present and the promise of the future.  It is the club’s mission to promote the Gaelic games and culture in Connecticut.  The Hartford GAA supports Senior Hurling, Senior Football and many age groups of Youth Hurling and Football teams playing in the Northeast Division of the United States GAA.
Hurling and Gaelic Football have a long history in the Hartford area dating back to 1914.  We know that the Hartford Gaelic team defeated Waterbury in 1914 to become State Champions and that the Kevin Barry Hurling Club, named in honor of the Irish patriot, was active in the Hartford area beginning in the 1920’s.  The early 20th century saw Gaelic sports being played throughout the Hartford area highlighted by teams of descendants from many of the counties of Ireland.  The Hartford Gaelic Football Club, officially formed in 1945, competed all over the U.S. to great success and fanfare throughout the succeeding decades.  This dedication to Gaelic football culminated in a National Championship in 1968 for the Hartford club.
The Hartford GAA has had much to celebrate in recent years in achieving its mission to promote the Gaelic games.  Participation is on the rise at both the youth and senior levels in both football and hurling and that increase has proven impactful in winning games, tournaments, and championships.  In 2021, the senior football team won the Northeast Division of the USGAA Junior C football division and were National Finalists.
